The Group is being supported by Jon Kenny, Community Archaeologist<\/a>. Aerial photographs from the North Yorkshire Archive Services have been used to identify areas which may be of interest for future archaeology work. Jan Mitchell undertook an archaeological desk based assessment<\/a>, and this was shared with the North Yorkshire County Council Archaeologist. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

As part of the Heritage Lottery project, in 2021 the OHHG undertook geophysical surveys and archaeological digs, including 3 trenches on a field in the village and numerous test pits in residents’ gardens. We were hoping to find evidence of a medieval manor house which pre-dated Osgodby Hall and uncover the medieval (Viking) origins of the village. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

An Aerial Photography workshop was held on 12 August 2018 led by Jon Kenny, Community Archaeologist and Tony Hunt, Yorkshire Archaeological Mapping. The day, attended by about 28 people, covered all aspects of aerial archaeology, including taking photographs , crops marks etc ., and other scientific methods of looking at archaeology from the sky. In particular, the workshop looked at the role of drones, and a demonstration was given at the end of the workshop, with drones flying over the village and surrounding fields.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Babthorpe Seal<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Several years ago, a local metal detectorist discovered the Babthorpe seal lying in fields within the area. This is now held in the Yorkshire Museum in York. The Babthorpe family held the Lord of the Manor of Osgodby 1440 \u2013 1622.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
