He started by confirming that, contrary to belief, witches were not burnt in England but were hung. In Scotland they were burned. Both men and women were accused of witchcraft.

The first Act to be passed was in the Reign of Henry VIIII in 1542 and made “‘conjurations of spirits, witchcrafts, enchantments, or sorceries’ capital crimes punishable in common law rather than simply sins subject to Church Courts. In Queen Elizabeth 1 reign in 1563 an Act enabled a spate of criminal trials and executions of people accused of harmful magic. In 1604 an Act was passed included new elements, “entertaining evil spirits – familiarly known as ‘familiars’ – or using human corpses for necromantic rituals” became capital offences, for example. The Act also increased the penalty for those who harmed but did not kill someone by means of witchcraft from imprisonment to death. Intended ‘for the better restraining of said offences and more severe punishing the same’. The Act remained the law until 1736. The Witchcraft Act 1735 made it a crime for a person to claim any human being had magical powers or was guilty of practising witchcraft. With this the law abolished the hunting and execution of witches in Great Britain. The Witchcraft Act 1735 remained in force in Britain until it’s eventual repeal with the enactment of the Fraudulent Mediums Act 1951 (the latter repealed in 2008)

Dave shared the stories of a number of women who were accused of witchcraft including (to mention a few)

1597 – Elizabeth Melton, Collingham

1605 Jone Jurdie, York

1736 Bridget Golsborough, Baildon

Isabell Pollington, Pocklington

1675 Ann Armstrong

1663 Anne Green, Gargrave

1617 Anne Dixon, Leeds

1656 Katherine Earle

Thanks to Dave for his interesting talk

15 members and 12 visitors enjoyed an evening talk by Dave Weldrake, “Yorkshire Folklore on Witchcraft in Yorkshire in the 16th and 17th centuries”.
