Following our June meeting with a talk by Phil Gilbank on the “Pilgrimage of Grace 1536 led by Robert Aske of Aughton”, a group of us had a summer outing to visit Aughton Church on 11 August. The Church Tower was rebuilt in memory of Robert Aske. It is a beautiful little Church and is Grade I listed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Unfortunately, due to severe structural movement it has been placed on the “At Risk” register. \u00a3800,00 needs to raised and the Friends of Aughton Church launched the Robert Aske 500 project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We also learned about the surrounding medieval landscape and other listed monuments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Osgodby has some “loose” connections with Aughton, Nigel Fossard (Lord of the Manor at Osgodby) was also Lord of the Manor in Aughton, plus other nearby places, such as South Duffield, Foggathorpe, Ellerton,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Another snippet of a connection, during our tea and cakes, a member who used to live in Osgodby at “Aughton House”, said the house was named that because the first owner of the property was from Aughton.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was a very interesting afternoon, and great hospitality by the hosts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
