ABOUT US

Following some research on the village carried out by the Osgodby Village Institute in 2015, and displayed in the Village Institute, volunteers were asked to form the Osgodby Village Institute Local History Group (working name Osgodby Heritage & History Group) to specifically undertake a project to research the history and heritage of Osgodby. In April 2018, the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) awarded a grant of £49,500 to deliver a project “A Village with a Heritage Nun Could Guess”. The project title took its name from Mary Ward, foundress and pioneer who lived at Osgodby Hall at the end of the 1500s/early 1600s with her Babthorpe relatives. She founded a religious order, the Congregation of Jesus, and for over 400 years the community of sisters have resided at what is now known as the Bar Convent in York. Sisters from all over the world still visit Osgodby.

This website shares the research and outcomes of the HLF project for everyone to enjoy.

When the HLF‑funded project concluded on 30 September 2022, volunteers wanted to establish an independent group from the Osgodby Village Institute on a formal footing. A group was formally constituted as the Osgodby Heritage and History Group on 10 January 2023, establishing a membership structure, regular meetings, and ongoing research.
