Did you know The Wadkin Arms was not the first pub in the village?
Research in the East Riding of Yorkshire Archives Alehouse Recognizances show the first record of a beer house is from 1754 to 1779. Sarah Pratt ran the beer house, but we do not know where Sarah lived. She died in 1780.
From 1780 to 1784, records show John Rushforth running a beer house.
HALF MOON PUBLIC HOUSE
Unfortunately there is a gap in records, and it is not until the 1819 Enclosure Record a Public House licensed to sell beers, wines and spirits, is recorded. The building was part of the Osgodby Estate, and the licensed landlady was Elizabeth Douglas. The house was situated opposite the Lodge on the corner of South Duffield Road and Moor Lane (Pigeon Lane), and was known as the Half Moon.
In the 1823 Baines Directory Elizabeth Douglas is recorded as the Victualler and the name of the public house given as the “Half Moon”. It is not known when the Half Moon ceased. (Elizabeth Douglas was buried on 4 October 1829 aged 61)
