Thank you to Richard Taylor our guest speaker at our June monthly meeting who took us on a virtual tour following in the footsteps of the Georgians around York.

Some of the people and places we heard about:

The Black Swan and The George Coaching Inns in Coney Street

Madame Tussauds and her exhibitions in the Assembly Rooms in Blake Street;

Dora Jordon comic actress on the Yorkshire circuit and starred at the York Theatre Royal (her colourful private life included being mistress to the future King William IV);

Mary Tuke’s cocoa and chocolate business in Walmgate (later moved to Coppergate and bought by Henry I Rowntree);

The York Lunatic Asylum scandal;

The Judges Lodgings, York Debtors Goal, and the Assizes Courts

A very enjoyable and entertaining evening
