We had a cracker of an evening at the monthly meeting on 14 November! Our guest speaker was Eric Jackson, Local and Family Historian, who came to speak about “The Gunpowder Plot”. We heard about the history of religion in England, and background to the conspiracy leading to the plot to blow up the House of Lords during the state opening of parliament in November 1605, and why the plan failed. We also heard about the traditions of Guys Fawkes Night evolving into recent times as “Bonfire Night” We also shared the links with Osgodby through Mary Ward who was living with her relatives, the Babthorpe family, at Osgodby Hall at that time. Mary’s three uncles Christopher Wright, John Wright and Thomas Percy were conspirators. In true tradition at this time of the year, we all enjoyed homemade Yorkshire Parkin!
