A local field owner kindly asked us if we would like the opportunity to “go on one of their fields”. We had a look at LiDAR information, consulted the very helpful Jon Kenny, Community Archaeologist, and had a visit to look at the field. We could not pass off the opportunity to carry out some work on a field in the village (very rare opportunity!).

We agreed we could do some geophys and a spot of field walking despite the field not having been ploughed. We also asked a local resident who is a metal detectorist if they would like to be involved. The call was made for volunteers to help, and plans made for days/times, together with planning car parking arrangements to ensure safety of people and cars. We were set and ready to go!
Then along came Storm Jocelyn! Wet and very windy weather over which we had no control! The first morning, we arrived on the field which despite all the wet weather was remarkably quite dry so a couple of cars risked being parked on the field. However, the storm has blown down a tree where we wanted to start on the field, but it was carry on regardless!!
So, grids marked out, machine (kindly loaned by Jon Kenny), set-up and off we went……
We worked over a two and a half day period. The last day Friday, was cold but the wind had died down and the sun was shining all day.
Thank you to everyone involved. We await the results!
