On 8 August, 18 members/visitors enjoyed our summer outing with a visit to Abbot’s Staith in Selby to hear about the history of the building. Everyone was surprised by the extent of the building and how the “Madhouse” (known locally), i.e. the nightclub on the street side of the building hides the medieval warehousing. Mark led the group around the ground floor of the building explaining it’s history. Unfortunately, due to health and safety purposes, we were unable to go upstairs in the old part of the building. We learnt about some of it’s very unique brick work and the dig carried out a couple of years ago. Janet shared her memories of working in the building when it was Woodhead’s Seed Shop.

At the end of the visit we all gathered for a cuppa and a chat.

Many thanks to Mark for leading the evening and for Alistair who did a brilliant job with the torch! .

Hope to see you all again soon at our next meeting on 12 September! .
